SEM 2 - GROUP INSTALLATION

This projects incorporates the elements of Orange, Up and Wave. Orange is addressed through the literal inclusion of a mandarin orange, which is a symbol of good fortune in Chinese culture. This mandarin, is hidden underneath a dyed surface of water, and emerges slowly as water drains via a web of roots, a process resembling the reverse of a tree. Waves of fabric enveloping the space generate a feeling of being underneath, as if surfacing for air.
The piece was initially conceived to speak towards the unexpected emergence of fortune and the feeling of breathing, arising from a complex inter-web of relationships and memories. The viewer is confronted with this tangled nature when entering the space, facing a literal web of rope that constrains passage.

Interestingly, the final installation morphed beyond its original intent. The feeling generated by the hanging fabric, sound, orange light, and the slow, dark dripping of water transformed the space into something akin to a place of worship, a cult, which is the feeling that in my personal opinion became its most compelling aspect.
Background:
As I was designing the roots of the piece, I was inspired by Chiharu Shiota, who uses coloured thread to generate a web of 'memories, dreams, anxiety and silence'. (https://www.qagoma.qld.gov.au/exhibition/chiharu-shiota)
