CONCEPTUAL DRAWING

Undefined is a response to charcoal marks and geometric, repetitive shapes in the reference work. To me, the change in thickness and pressure of the charcoal marks represent organic but intentional movement, such as contraction, expansion, softness, and hardness.

Undefined takes place in a two-meter by two-meter unprimed canvas, and captures the encounter between Charcoal, Conte, and the cotton fibres. The movement begins with fluid and expansive marks that dance and define paths along an un-marked surface, requiring the use of the entire body. Circle and super-positions of shape promptly emerge from this dance. Snail-like structures, concentric circles, a tree, a hand, a bird. There is no set definition for this work, just the constraints of time and the interplay between charcoal and canvas, captured by the leftover dust weaving in-and-out of the surface, an advantage of leaving the canvas unprimed.

Undefined is temporal in its essence, as the charcoal is not guaranteed to stay in place and movement may take and add to the piece. We see this in mirroring on the right-hand side of the canvas, which corresponds to a section of the work that entered into contact with pre-existing marks when being transported into the exhibition space. The receptive nature of the surface, the changes in the work as it interacts with intention, as well as the unconstrained way in which it is presented, all speak towards the evolving and organic nature of Undefined.
